Voiceworks #107 Relic
Voiceworks Issue #107, ‘Relic’, is the survivor of a long lineage, a print artefact refusing to die out in the digital wastes. Inside its pages, you’ll find stories about sexuality in suburbia, a kid called Goblin, and flash fiction lurking behind second-crocodile perspective. There’s nonfiction pieced together from found documents, and essays refusing to play by the rules—they’ll wear your skin, eat your co-workers and burn the patriarchal archive to the ground. Poetry says ‘pffffffffft’ at men who make art, and comics take you with Goat and Bat on a trip to Shul.
This issue features nonfiction by Em Meller, a Sydney-based writer, and editor of Seizure’s Flashers, whose work has appeared in The Lifted Brow, Overland and Junkee. Her absurdly funny essay, ‘How to Write a Self-Help Book’, combines memoir, interview and criticism with extraterrestrial queens to explore the self-help genre and wider notions of self-improvement. It will not teach you how to write a self-help book. It’s mostly about failure.
From an especially varied selection of fiction, we have Rhea Bhagat’s microfiction, ‘Umami’. In her own words, it ‘explores the female gaze, the dislocation of being a non-Western “foreigner” and how food is viscerally associated with place’. This issue also features experimental fiction from Jamie Marina Lau, a nineteen-year-old writer from Melbourne whose first novel will be published later this year by The Lifted Brow.
Among the art, you’ll find work by exceptional artists Frances Cannon, Lee Lai and Wheeler Centre Hot Desk fellow Mira Schlosberg.
