The theme of Voiceworks #137, ‘Gutter’, works in a couple of ways: it refers, not just to a vehicle for carrying off rainwater, but to the blank space between two opposite pages, and to the gap between panels in a comic strip. That’s no coincidence: this is the first issue to include our new section, Voiceworks Strips—a page of serialised comics by Frankie Carroll, Frances Gentile, Emily Sherlock and Sophie Wishart, Risograph printed by Glom Press!
To celebrate, we’ve put together a sumptuous comics fare: new comics by Alexander Poljansek, Frankie Carroll, Alyssa Mason and Declan David Miller—the latter two of whom are part of Stick Mob Studio, the trailblazing First Nations comics collective from Mparntwe/Alice Springs—plus interviews with alumni Marc Pearson and Tommi Parrish.
Lauren Melleah and Talia Freeman stage concrete-poetic voyages into waterways and cityscapes; Zach Mekler and Hannah Vesey write stories that traverse fiction’s outermost extremes, from abjection to rapturous lyricism, birth to death; Katerina Daris, Hannah Vlies Lawrence and Zadie Kennedy McCracken explore intergenerational inheritances, in many forms: a history of displacement, a William Carlos Williams poem, a perfect lesbian car.
Poets Tui Butler, Zarah Yakubu and Harrison Abbott contribute verses that dig directly into the ‘particulars of pain’ (Butler) and ‘hard ground’ of the tongue (Yakubu), tracking ‘mud [that] will never leave’ onto the page (Abbott). All that, plus art by Dhishni de Silva, a cover by Ruby Dawson, and illustrations by Abi Quin.
